Commissioner not attending meetings, still getting paid

SAGINAW (WJRT) -

(09/11/12) - A controversial former Mid-Michigan city manager is causing a little more controversy.

Earlier this year, Buena Vista Township Manager Bregitte Braddock fired the township's police chief.

Several weeks later, Braddock resigned, taking a private sector job in Detroit.

She is still a Saginaw County Commissioner, but her attendance record at county meetings is not sitting well with some constituents.

Bregitte Braddock is not attending many Saginaw County meetings these days, but she is still being paid by county taxpayers.

"If you are getting paid, you should do the job," says Saginaw resident Wayne Steverson.

That's normally how it works, but in the case of Bregitte Braddock, it's not clear what work she is doing as a Saginaw County Commissioner. When she announced she was resigning as Buena Vista Township Manager, just two months after firing the township police chief Brian Booker, Braddock said she would serve out the remainder of her county commission term. One function of being a county commissioner, attend meetings of county boards and committees she sits on. According to Saginaw County records, Braddock has attended only one of 14 scheduled meetings since June. However, she continues to be paid $836 a month for being a commissioner, plus benefits.

"I make around maybe that, and I work twice as hard," says Pat Szczepanik of Saginaw. "If anybody is paid to run our system, they should at least show up to the meetings. You usually don't show up, you lose your job."

"Bregitte had been a very good county commissioner," Steverson says. "She is still getting paid, so she still she serve out her term and fulfill her duties as county commissioner for this area."

Sue Matinkhah, who also lives in Braddock's district, has this recommendation. "I think she should resign, I think she should resign or do her job," says Matinkhah.

We have tried to get in touch with Bregitte Braddock for comment on this story for a couple of days, but have not heard back.
