(09/18/12) - A $3 million investment is on its way to downtown Flint. Genesys Health Systems officially announced plans to open a downtown medical clinic to include a store front pharmacy and a women's clinic.
The clinic will be on the 400 block of South Saginaw Street between 1st and Kearsley. Construction is already underway. The clinic will open July 2013.
Tuesday morning, members of the community and Genesys Health System gathered together to celebrate the new addition to the bricks. The clinic will include a pharmacy that will face Saginaw Street and an urgent care clinic entrance will be in the back.
There will also be internal medicine and women's services. About 60 employees from Genesys' West Flint campus will move to the new location and they hope to create more employment opportunities.
The clinic is part of revitalizing downtown and providing quality healthcare services to the urban population.
Tracey Whelpley owns the Lunch Studio. Her business is a few doors down from the clinic, which will also include a strorefront pharmacy. "There are a lot of people that rely on public transportation, so this is walking distance for a lot of people, which I think is big."
Access to healthcare is a big plus for Delma Thomas Jackson, a student at UM-Flint. He also hopes the health center can help those who can't get the care they need. "Particularly with the northside losing some of its healthcare facilities, even though this is downtown, it's still more accessible for folks on the north side who otherwise may not have access."
