Romney caught-on-tape: Comments spark debate

Posted: Updated:

(09/18/12) - He asked to see the whole video, and he got his wish. On Tuesday, a liberal publication released 49 minutes worth of a question-and-answer session between Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney and supporters during a private fundraiser last May.

The video was recorded without Romney's knowledge, and is sparking debate across the political world.

Romney says on the tape, "There are 47 percent of the people who will vote for the president no matter what. There are 47 percent who are with him, who are dependent on government, who believe that they are victims, who believe that government has a responsibility to care for them, who believe they're entitled to health care, food, housing, you name it."

On Monday, Romney tried to clarify what he meant by "the 47 percent."

"These are people in his camp who vote for him almost no matter what.  And I also have a large number of people who will vote for me almost no matter what, at least I hope so.  And my campaign effort is to focus on the people in the middle," Romney said.

The Obama campaign jumped to criticize Romney, calling his comments "revealing."

"Governor Romney disdainfully wrote off 47 percent of Americans," said 'Obama for America' campaign spokesman Ben LaBolt.

LaBolt told us the Americans Romney was taking aim at are not victims looking for handouts.

"We've heard from Americans across the country over the past 24 hours who said, ‘Wait a second.  Who's Mitt Romney talking about?'" LaBolt said. "I think this raises serious questions about who Mitt Romney would be fighting for if he served in the Oval Office."

Both sides maintain voters will have a choice between two distinctive paths for the country in November.

"The president believes in what I've described as a government-centered society where government provides a larger and larger role, provides for more and more for the needs of individuals.  And I happen to believe instead of a free-enterprise and free-individual society," Romney said.

It's still uncertain exactly what impact Romney's comments will have on the election. Some analysts went so far as to say he lost the election. Others think this video is a blunder that will blow over.
