Boys and Girls Club warn of bogus job listing

Posted: Updated:

(09/19/12) - An ad on Craigslist says there's an opening at a Flint nonprofit, but the problem is: there is no job opening. They say it's a fraud, and falling for it could cost you.

The Boys and Girls Club found out about this when people started showing up with their resumes.

They want everyone to know that someone is trying to dupe job hunters.

When people started calling the Boys and Girls Club in Flint asking about a job ad on Craigslist, it left executive director Jamie Gaskin wondering, "What job on Craigslist?"

They checked it out for themselves and found a fake job listing, saying the Boys and Girls Club is hiring an executive assistant.

"It was news to my current executive assistant," he said. "It's not just happening at our Boys and Girls Club, but Boys and Girls Clubs in Mid-Michigan, in other cities and around the Midwest."

They say when you apply to the job, someone will send back an email requesting very sensitive information.

"It's one of those things they're asking for personal information, they're trying to run credit checks on them to apply for the job," Gaskin said.

And once you send it, it's in their hands. It all comes down to this: Online job hunters beware.

"You just really have to watch your back with the way things are today, if it doesn't add up, pick up the phone and call," Gaskin said.

The Flint ad has been removed, but there are still many more cities being targeted.
