Michigan Warriors ready for home opener

FLINT (WJRT) -

(09/20/12) - Following a one and three start on the road, the Michigan Warriors are looking forward to Sunday's home opener in Flint. They'll face the Soo Eagles at 4 p.m.

"I want to see this place completely packed. I'm talking everyone in the stands, everyone around the aisle seats getting ready and cheering us on, and we're going to do our best for the fans and get a W," said Warriors Forward Sean Reynolds.

It's the third season for the Warriors at Perani Arena. In the past, the junior hockey team has struggled to fill seats. Several changes took place over the summer. Ownership remains the same, but the Warriors are now being run by Firland Management, the same group that operates the arena.

"Everything has improved from the regular season tickets to the sponsorships and things like that.  We're probably close to double in all of those areas," said Warriors Operations Manager Jeremy Torrey.

While Firland believes the Warriors financial success will be affected by how the guys fare on the ice, the company believes building a family friendly atmosphere off the ice is just as important. The team is planning a pre-game tailgate for Sunday.

"We have inflatables out there for kids. We have a skate with the team after the game, continuing that community awareness. Our players are going to be a lot more available and accessible this year," Torrey said.

"This year, we're going to try to visit the hospitals and get out the schools and visit the kids. If anyone wants to do anything, come see us, ask us out, and we'll be glad to come out and see you guys," said Warriors Goalie Trevor Gorsuch.

With the Red Wings season on hold due to the NHL lockout, the Warriors hope that hockey hungry fans will come out and give them a chance.

"This is hockey. We can given them a little fight and whatever else they want to see down here, so it'll be good, yeah," said Warriors Forward Luke Rendino.
