Family, friends hold vigil for Saginaw shooting victim

Posted: Updated:

(09/24/12) - Candles burned in Saginaw Monday to remember the city's eighteenth homicide victim this year.

Darius Gates was shot and killed Sunday on the city's south side. Police say the shooting happened in the 3000 block of Birch Park Drive near Hess Avenue.

There have been at least three deadly shootings in that same area in the last four years.

Heavy hearts met around a memorial at Birch Park Town homes Monday evening.

"I was just with him the other day, now we're out here paying our respects to him," said Mike Jordan, a friend of Darius.

Friends were in shock when they heard what happened to Gates.

"He had the sweetest heart, he's a good person, a real good person, he got along with everybody," said Quinnterra Thomas, who said Gates was like a brother to her.

Neighbors in Saginaw are becoming all too familiar with the sound of gunfire. They say there's only one way to put an end to the killings.

"Tell what you know, that's the only way we're going to get it to stop," said Michelle Howard, a friend of Gates.

Police are still investigating. Anyone with information should contact the Saginaw Police Department or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-422-JAIL.
