Victim says he'd shoot again if necessary

Posted: Updated:
FLINT (WJRT) -

(09/26/12) - Zak Held says he knows first hand just how bad crime is in Flint.

He shot and injured the man he says was robbing him at gunpoint at his Flint home, on the city's southwest side, in August.

"You gotta defend yourself," Held says. "These guys are everywhere. I've got one off the street, apparently, but there's more."

Charges were just recently issued against the alleged armed robber Drevon Cathron.

Held, 22, says there were actually two armed men that night.

Held says he and some friends were sitting outside, by a bonfire, when they approached.

"It kept echoing in my head, 'I'm going to shoot you if you don't find a wallet. I'm going to shoot you if you don't find a wallet,'" he says.

So Held says he did what he could to keep his friends and himself safe.

"They had my friend Matt at gun point," Held says. "(He) put the gun to my head."

Held fired his gun.

He says he was able sneak it into his pocket and keep it hidden even during a pat down by one of the two armed men.

Flint Police say it was 18-year-old Cathron he hit.

Cathron now faces 11 charges in connection with that armed robbery, at Held's home in August, and in connection with at least two similar crimes that same night.

Police are still looking for more information about the second person believed to be involved.

As for Held, he says police still have his gun, but he has since bought another and has applied for his concealed pistol license.

When asked if he'd shoot again?

"Oh yeah," he answered. "I mean, I feel bad I had to do something like that to him, but he was in the wrong."

"He was telling my friends, at least that's what they said, 'It's hard times.' Well, you know, I've got hard times too. I work hard for my things too.  How many people you got to rob before it becomes right?"

Cathron is being held, without bond, in the Genesee County Jail.

Held has moved out of Flint.

"I live in the country now," he says.
