Ambulance services combine in Genesee County

GENESEE COUNTY (WJRT) -

(09/26/12) - Two ambulance services are joining forces. It's the first consolidation of its kind in the area. Genesee County EMS and STAT EMS have announced they are pooling resources and combining some operations.

The new combination now has the largest market share in Genesee County. They say combining operations will better serve the community.

"By adding one plus one, we can really equal three instead of two and both enjoy the benefits of a consolidated workforce and management force," said Marc Lund, STAT EMS CEO.

They've worked together in the past, and now the relationship will be even closer. Bob Christenson is Genesee County EMS President - he made the initial offer to partner up. "In this consolidation, there is no expectation that we are going to lose any ambulance coverage. In fact, we expect we can better cover the areas we currently cover."

"One agency might be running 10 to 20 ambulances on any given day. When you combine those, you have the available resources of 30 combined consolidated resources on any given day," Lund added.

The companies will streamline dispatch services and the hiring process. STAT EMS work force will increase by 30 percent - they hope that will drive down response times and drive up availability and accountability.

"Our road personnel have been moved over to become STAT employees and we are then leasing them back along with any additional employees that we need. The employees that had some concerns, I think the vast majority of them are starting to realize that they are going to see a pay raise," Christenson added.

"We are taking the best of both worlds, what they're doing great at, what we are doing great, and really what it will ultimately do is enhance how we deliver pre-hospital care to the citizens of Genesee County and its visitors, that's our goal," said Joe Karlichek, STAT EMS COO.

Genesee County EMS is a not for profit agency they want to continue to build on that and provide better service to those with little or no insurance. They also hope to be able to hire more people.
