Custom bike for Chesaning girl with cerebral palsy vanishes, possibly stolen

Posted: Updated:

(09/26/12) - More than just a set of wheels, a custom-made bike meant the freedom to ride and play just like any other child for a Chesaning 12 year old.

But now, it looks like thieves stole that from the little girl.

Miranda Spitler has cerebral palsy and can't ride two-wheel bikes. Someone from a local bicycling club took the time to build her a special bike, but when she went to ride it Tuesday afternoon, it was gone.

Like most 12-year-old girls, Miranda loves being outside and riding her bike, but Miranda has mild cerebral palsy and can't ride just any bicycle.

That's why her special bike meant so much to her.

"I was able to ride it without falling off," she said.

But when she came home from school Tuesday afternoon, it had vanished.

The bike was built out of love, especially for this little girl.

This past spring, Ed White, a member of the Peddlers Club and a complete stranger to Miranda, found out she needed a custom ride. He jumped at the opportunity to build this for her and never asked for a dime.

"Somebody had to have stolen it, somebody had to have seen it and seen her riding it before and wanted it, we had other bikes in there too, nothing else is missing," said Melissa Spitler, her mother.

Miranda just met her handy man for the first time on Wednesday. He and her family are doing everything they can to get this bike back to the little girl who loves it.

"For me, it's not so much about the guy that did it or the bike, it's about her, the bike gives her freedom and mobility and returning something like that should be priceless," White said.

Miranda's family is offering a $100 reward, no questions asked, to whoever returns the bike.
