(09/27/12) - Stores are expected to add hundreds of thousands of jobs across the nation and some of those can be found in Mid-Michigan.

Walmarts across the country along with several other nationwide chains are ramping up their staff for the holiday shopping season.

In preparation for the busiest time of the year, Toys R Us announced it will hire 45,000 seasonal employees to staff stores and distribution centers. They're hiring 5,000 more than last year.

Kohl's department store is also hiring more than 52,000 workers - that's also up from last year. Store officials say that's on average about 41 employees per store.

Walmart will add 50,000 people to their workforce for the holiday shopping season. They also will offer more hours for their current associates.

Jeremy Anthony of Flint has been looking for months for a steady job. "I see more doors starting to opening up for me so I mean I'm not going to panic, if I keep working hard at it, it will work out."

He's searching the web Thursday for new opportunities like most of the people at Michigan Works in Flint.

Ruth Johnson has experience in customer service a temporary position during the holiday season would help out a lot. "I'm looking for anything, I'm working at the pickly factory right now and it's only seasonal."

Gail Bowman is a Career Alliance coordinator at Michigan Works she said more people have come to rely on seasonal employment to get them through the year. "People are desperate and anything they can get right now is acceptable we don't see a lot of people shying away from it because of the need."

Jeremy Anthony adds he'll send in his resume and hope for the best. "I was told it can lead up to something permanent, I'm trying, trying everywhere. Just don't give up, nothing is going come to you if you don't keep trying."

Industry experts say overall the increase in hiring this year is due to predicted increase in sales.

Dozens of people are searching for a job at Career Alliance in Flint. Those who run the center say more and more people turn to seasonal work to help them get by and it's an opportunity that could lead to more.
