(09/28/12) - A Clio first grader was reunited with her father Friday, who was serving in Afghanistan.
Specialist Don Pollock surprised his 6-year-old daughter Willow at school.
He flew in from Mississippi early Friday morning, enjoyed breakfast with this wife, then headed straight to Garner Elementary School in Clio.
Very little comes in between a dad and his little girl. Willow was stunned when she saw her dad walk through her classroom door.
"We were sitting in Mississippi and the idea just came to me," Don Pollock said. "It's tough, it really is. I haven't been away from her since she was born, until now."
"I don't think there was a dry eye in the room," said Garner Elementary School principal John Darga.
Specialist Pollock has been gone a year, serving with the Michigan National Guard in Afghanistan. He's a part of the HHC First 125th and is a supply clerk working on weapons.
"I left Oct. 15, two days before her birthday, and now I'm home before her birthday," he said.
Don and his wife Brenda have been married for 20 years - Willow has two brothers in high school. The family has waited a long time for this day.
"It's very worth it, it's worth it to know he's home safe, we made it through with no problems, everybody is good and healthy. We're happy," Brenda said.
All that's left to do now is spend time together.
"Just going to hang out, regroup as a family and get to know each other again, spend time together," Brenda said.
"Nothing for a couple of days, just be with my family, try to spend time with the kids and spend time with my wife," Don said.
When asked if he's going back to the front lines, Specialist Pollock says he's done and that he should be home for quite a while.
