First look at new MSP Tri-City Post

Posted: Updated:

(10/01/12) - We're getting our first look at the new Tri-City Post for the Michigan State Police.

It's in Bay County's Williams Township, but within miles of Midland and Saginaw counties as well.

This has been a project that has been in the works for nearly four years, and now the building is up and running.

Monday was the first official day that troopers were operating out of there.

The building is located on Salzburg between M-47 and Flajole Road in Williams Township.

MSP Assistant Post Commander Lt. Jerry Carter says what makes this facility so special is where it's located.

"This post is geographically centered Between Bay, Midland and Saginaw Counties. Within a mile of each direction, you're in Midland, Saginaw, Bay and with the interstate, you can get to wherever you need to go very quickly, so this post will be a great staging area for unforeseen events because its location," Carter said.

Joann Maziarz  has lived in Williams Township for nearly 50 years. Her home is blocks away from where the new Tri-City Post for Michigan State Police stands.

The building gives her hope that progress is being made in her town.

"It means that the county is really progressing. Years ago, there was nothing here but woods, so it's really come a long ways in 50 years," Maziarz said.

The post is going to house troopers that respond to people in Bay, Midland and Saginaw Counties.

"We'll be able to run all kind of operations from this post and then we'll be able to support our detachments such as Bridgeport and then we also have some cars that we keep at Thomas Township so we'll be able to geographically support the citizens of the Tri-City post area," Carter said.

It's not something Maziarz never thought she would see so close to home.

"It's nice that it did come here and I'm surprised that I'd even have it in my lifetime to have something like that around here. Never thought I would see this building here, that's for sure," she said.

The total project was roughly $3.7 million.

We were not able to get inside, but we're told that there will be a building dedication in the future. A date hasn't been set at this time.
