VASSAR (WJRT) -

(10/05/12)- A soldier who was hurt in Afghanistan is determined to help others.

Staff Sergeant Travis Mills of the 82nd Airborne lacks what many of us take for granted.

ABC12 News talked with the soldier, who is isn't letting his circumstance get him down.

Mills spent the past six months recovering at a hospital in Maryland. He returned home to Michigan Wednesday.

He lost parts of his legs and arms in April while serving in Afghanistan.

"I took my backpack off, which happened to be full of ammunition, so I had 600 in my pack. I sat it down. I was in explosion."

"You go to bed, you don't wear this stuff to bed. You take it off, you sat it down, you charge the legs because it's battery powered" he explained.

Mills gets support from his wife Kelsey. His 1-year-old daughter also gives him motivation.

"I'm not a big person to go and get tattoos, but right here is my daughter's name. I got it super bowl Sunday. Chloe. I will never let her see me fail, she'll see me fall down, she'll see my struggle, but I'm going to make it. I'm going to persevere. I'm going to keep going," he said.

"I tell him 'I didn't marry you for your limbs, I married you for who you are' and he's still the same person," Kelsey said.

Mills is thankful to the Vassar community for showing him so much support through it all. When he gets better, he wants to train soldiers in the military.

"My wife and I talked about it. She knows I love my job. I can't do my job no more in a way of going over seas, strap on my boots and fight for my country the way I did before, but I can teach them, I can train them. I can show them right from wrong," he said.

Travis will speak at Friday night's football game at Vassar High, where he played football.

The Tunnel to Towers Foundation is going to help build a smart home for Travis and his family.
