(10/08/12) - Just as that October chill is setting in, flu season is in full effect. Beginning this week, and through mid-November, the McLaren Medical Group is in all-out attack mode.
"We are ready to go. We have over 50 centers across Mid-Michigan and more than 35,000 shots to give," said Dawn Smith, McLaren Regional operations manager.
While many don't have that sense of urgency, McLaren says it's best to get a seasonal flu shot immediately.
"It is important to do it right now because we never know when flu season is going to peak. We need to protect ourselves and especially our seniors, and those with other chronic problems like asthma and lung disease," Smith said.
It's also recommended that children under the age of 2 get their shot right away. But while it can do plenty of good, there are some misconceptions about just how much good it can actually do.
"People think this stops the stomach flu and it does not do that. It's just for upper respiratory and for coughing, fever and wheezing," said Linda Evans, McLaren team leader.
As for those needles, it's still a pointed concern for some, but there is an alternative that's becoming more widespread.
"There is a nasal spray available and it's more available than it has been in the past, and we do have it at our Fenton location," Smith said.
And while the needles aren't necessarily smaller than last year's version, they have improved.
"The precision of these needles are much sharper and smoother. They glide in quickly. The shot just takes seconds, and there's less pain," Evans said.
