Vandals damage Mid-Michigan church

(10/08/12) - Vandals hit a Mid-Michigan church this weekend, causing thousands of dollars in damage. It happened at the Trinity Assembly of God.

Church leaders say they're upset, but praying for those responsible.

Early Saturday morning, two teenagers broke into the garage at the church.

"One of the buses actually had six windows broke out, had epithets written all over it, graffiti on one side. There was oil splashed on one side of the bus," said senior pastor Larry Alverson.

Not content with that, the suspects tried to burn open some store room doors.

"I'm really glad that didn't work out well for them," Alverson said.

And there was a second arson attempt.

"There were some flares on the ground. It appeared as though they were trying to set them on fire or set the building on fire or some such thing," Alverson said.

The pair then broke a window in the church building and crawled in. They set off a burglar alarm and the alarm company notified a church member who lives nearby and has a key. He found the teens in a room with two vending machines. The two escaped out a window they had already broken and disappeared into the night.

"There were pop cans and Gatorade bottles and potato chip bags laying everywhere," Alverson said.

That's when the vandalism in the garage was found.

"Unbelievable, that's the worst damage I've ever seen. After 21 years of being a keyholder here, I wasn't prepared for that," said Doug Chilson, a church member.

Mt. Morris Township Police tracked down two suspects who live near the church. They could be charged with attempted arson.

"If they just walked in and asked for help, we'd give them help. It really saddens me," Alverson said.

"Vandalism, theft, disrespect... it's on the rise," Chilson said.

A few months ago, thieves caused thousands of dollars in damage at the church when they stole copper from eight air conditioning units.
