New MBS terminal to open Oct. 31

TITTABAWASSEE TOWNSHIP (WJRT) -

(10/08/12) - A brand new, $55 million terminal is just about ready to open at MBS International Airport.

Original plans had the new terminal up and running sometime in 2013, but construction crews are now shooting for a new deadline, Oct. 31. "Almost a full year early," said Jeff Nagel, the airport manager.

After grant money came in earlier than expected and the weather cooperated this past summer, the timetable was moved up. "Four or five months ago we really started thinking could, could we do this before Nov. 1. because that was the deadline the airlines put on us because of the holiday season," Nagel explained.

There's still protective plastic at the check in windows, and the Transportation Safety Administration still has to install security checkpoints, but the gate area is pretty much set.

The best new feature Nagel believes, is the much-anticipated concession counter. "Probably the number one complaint that we got at our old terminal building was once you got through screening, and of course everybody wants you there early now, there were only vending machines." Now you can buy something to eat before and after security.

What's not new is the easy in, easy out approach. "There's no steps, there's no escalators, there's no elevator," Nagel explained.

When you're leaving, be sure to check out a special feature on the walkway from the gate area heading towards the baggage claim. A set of windows and some etched glass actually spell out 'MBS' in Morse code.

Nagel believes those little design details make this new terminal warmer, and more inviting. "Hopefully folks will relax before the flight. They can get through screening, have something to eat, relax a little bit. It's nice, a lot of light, read a book, do whatever and then board the flight."

As for the old terminal, it will eventually be torn down to make way for future development.
