LAPEER (WJRT) -

(10/13/12) - Hockey and the color pink. That's not a normal combination.

But Saturday, they went together just fine.

The 'Pink at the Rink' event took place at the Polar Palace in Lapeer.

Organizers hope the event inspires women to get checked out and take care of themselves.

"We are really passionate about the cause, we lost a friend about a year ago. As women I think it's important to pay attention to your health. A lot of times as working mothers, we neglect that, and after the loss of our friend, we wanted to bring to the front of women's minds how important it is to take care of yourself first," said Jodie Hendrickson, one of the organizers.

The event raised almost $6,000.
