Mid-Michigan veteran honored with Bronze Star 61 years after serving in Korean War

(10/14/12) - It's been more than six decades, but a local hero is finally being recognized. A Mid-Michigan veteran was honored with the bronze star Sunday, years after his act of bravery.

"He turned 80 and he's lucky to be here," said Shirley Fann. "We've had our ups and downs, but we always stuck together."

Elmer Fann and his wife Shirley like to listen to music at Flint Central Church of the Nazarene. But when his entire family showed up Sunday evening, he got a little suspicious.

Sixty-one years ago, Elmer served in the Korean War. He was only 17 years old.

He rescued one of his comrades while they were under attack, and that made him eligible for a bronze star.

"Three months ago, somewhere around that time, the family found particular papers stating that he was in fact eligible," said Donnie Cox, a family friend and church member. "He down played it, not wanting people to think he was being boastful."

They went to the church, and they contacted Congressman Dale Kildee, who presented the Bronze Star to Elmer Sunday night. He says he was just doing what was right.

"You didn't think nothing about it, I didn't think I was doing anything that was, but somebody must have been watching," Elmer said.

But his family, and everyone at the ceremony, calls him a hero.

"I'm feeling pretty proud of him, he was pretty surprised up there," said Ashley Fann, Elmer's granddaughter.

The bronze star is the fourth-highest combat decoration someone can receive.
