Women's impact on presidential election

UNDATED (WJRT) -

(10/17/12) - Both presidential candidates hope Thursday's debate performance sways a certain audience. The female vote is playing an important role in this year's campaign.

It's a battle for the female vote that both presidential contenders are hoping to count on this election. Thursday's debate brought women's issues to the forefront, especially when a question was asked about workplace equality. Local attorney Jade Edwards was watching.

" I feel like Obama is sincere because he has two daughters and legitimately wants them to come into a better environment."

Female support is expected to be crucial. The President leads in most polls among women, but Romney is trying to rally support in the finals days of the campaign.

"I think women intrinsically know the value of faith, value of family, which the President keeps fighting tooth and nail," said Carolyn Rabine of Grand Blanc.

Women voters say they care about the economy, jobs, their families and issues that impact them directly like reproductive rights and contraceptives.

"It's very important for women to be concerned and have any type of information and everything they need to make a decision about their own bodies," said Martha Wiley of Grand Blanc.

"Talking to young women in the community, definitely the issues of school, finances, finding a job seem to outweigh some of the other issues," said Dr. Amy Gresock.

UM-Flint communications professor Marcus Paroske said the women's vote is more important than it was four years ago. "The election is a bit tighter and there's a pretty significant gap between Obama and Romney, so a lot of focus on those suburban working swing voter women. Romney can win the election without winning the women's vote, but he's has to keep the gap in single digits. Obama's going to win the women's vote - it's just really a question about how much."
