Get out to vote rally

Posted: Updated:

(10/19/12) - We are just 18 days from election day. Voters will head to the polls on Nov. 6.

Right now, city leaders in Saginaw are preparing for a "Get out and Vote Rally" this weekend.

It will start at 6 p.m. Sunday. City leaders want voters to learn more about local and presidential candidates.

"We want to make sure that people understand the urgency to get out and vote, after all, this was not a right at one time," said Gary Loster, who is heading the rally.

The community center will be packed Sunday with undecided voters, local candidates running for office and city leaders.

"You're talking about a presidential election from that standpoint. A person who will appoint pro bally the next two to four supreme court judges which long after that president is gone will affect the lives of millions of people in this country," Loster explained.

His group is going door to door. They're spreading the word about their "Get out and Vote Rally".

They want to make sure no one is confused about the proposals that will be on the November ballot.

"We have people everywhere - in the parks, in the plazas, in the malls, in the churches making sure that we're getting the word out to be here to understand the proposals, know what you're voting for, know who you're voting for."

"I've gone to the polls before and really didn't know anything about it to be honest with you, or I just left it blank because I didn't know and sometimes we vote for something because we only have a brief sketching of what it is, but not realizing that a year from now that things begin to happen that is not good for you but you voted yes or you voted no when you should have voted the other way," said Ajhani Owusu, who is also helping with the event.

Some City clerks in Mid-Michigan are seeing an increase in absentee ballots compared to the last election. The most common question: "They're asking questions about the proposals and seeking more information of the meanings of these proposals," said Janet Santos, the Saginaw City Clerk.

The "Get out and Vote Rally" is from 6-8 p.m. Sunday at First Ward Community Center.

The deadline to apply for an absentee ballot is the Monday before the election. You can vote until 4 p.m. that day.

If you want one mailed, the deadline is the Saturday before the election.
