Bay City teen dies in car accident

Posted: Updated:
KENT COUNTY (WJRT) -

(10/20/12) - A 17-year-old Bay City teen has died after the car she was riding in crashed with a semi-truck.

The accident happened just after midnight Saturday morning on I-96 near US-131. That's on the west side of the state in Kent County.

State Police say 25-year-old Ashley Donnelly was driving when she missed the 131 exit. Donnelly then stopped on the highway and put the car in reverse.

Sgt. Scott Wilber says while she was backing up, the car lost control.

A semi-truck then crashed into the passenger's side door. Seventeen-year-old Autumn Elwell was sitting in the passenger's seat.

Elwell was pronounced dead at the scene.

Donnelly is Elwell's older sister and she is also pregnant. Sgt. Wilber says at last check she was in serious but stable condition.

The driver of the semi-truck was not injured.
