Murder charge handed down in death of 4-year-old Carnel Chamberlain

Posted: Updated:

(11/07/12) - Nearly five months ago, after a week of searching, a little boy's body was found buried near his mother's home.

Wednesday, her boyfriend was charged with murder tied to the death of 4-year-old Carnel Chamberlain.

Until now, he had only been charged with assaulting the Isabella County child.

For the Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe, this is the beginning of finding justice. The crime happened on their reservation, making it a federal case.

We spoke with them earlier, and they say they've waited a long time for this.

Court documents charge Anthony Bennett with first degree murder of a child, only referring to the child as CC, but he is already in jail for assaulting Carnel Chamberlain.

The family has suspected all along that Bennett had something to do with it.

Bennett, who is Carnel's mother's boyfriend, was supposed to be watching the boy when he went missing.

They searched through forests and fields for a week, only to find Carrel's charred remains under his mother's porch.

Carnel's cousin says this news came as a shock, and they're cautiously hopeful.

Bennett is also being charged with assaulting the boy's mother, animal cruelty and threatening witnesses.
