Oakland County charges likely Friday for suspect in roadway shootings

OAKLAND COUNTY (WJRT) -

(11/08/12) - Raulie Casteel could be back before a judge Friday.

Casteel, from Wixom in Oakland County, was charged in Livingston County Wednesday. He's suspected in a series of shootings, spanning four counties, dating back to Oct. 16.

A brief email from the Oakland County Sheriff's Office, Thursday afternoon, says there will be no charges or court appearances until Friday.

We do have new information about Casteel and it comes from, of all places, Twitter.

Casteel was polite in court Wednesday and in person "passionate about civil liberties and personal freedom-gee, just a bit," according to recent tweets.

A Twitter account, appearing to belong to Casteel, shows a man interested in politics and at times, suspicious of the government.

There's mention of a military helicopter flying over his home in Kentucky and how the sheriff's department there didn't take a complaint about it seriously.

One of his two retained attorneys, in court Wednesday, said he had recently moved to Michigan from Kentucky.

There are tweets about firearms, "The 2nd Amend is an absolute - absolutely no compromises - I carry everywhere I go!"

"Michigan needs more transparency - I call for an open carry law, not infringing on our Constitutional GOD-given right to keep and bear arms!"

"I believe he had a license, out of Kentucky, to carry a weapon, but he did not in Michigan," Livingston County Prosecutor David Morse said Wednesday.

The 43-year-old father, husband and college graduate is suspected in 24 shootings, mostly along the I-96 corridor. Most of them involved moving vehicles.

Casteel faces six counts in Livingston County, so far, tied to an Oct. 18 incident.

His bond is set at $2 million.

"There were some statements made by family members with respect to mental health," Morse said. "At this point it's pretty vague."

Charges are also likely in Shiawassee and Ingham counties.

Casteel could be facing federal charges as well.
