(11/09/12) - The Salvation Army of Genesee County has launched its annual Red Kettle Campaign, with the goal of raising more than $845,000.
The Salvation Army Band played Christmas music to get the effort off on the right foot Friday.
Through Christmas Eve, bell ringers will collect donations at dozens of red kettle sites located at retailers and businesses throughout Genesee County.
Although this year's goal is slightly larger than last year, Salvation Army leaders are confident the campaign will be successful.
"The public has always stepped up. The public understands the need and they just understand the people are hurting and we usually take care of the goal and the people come up and take care of what needs to be done," said Major Wayne Ruston, Salvation Army of Genesee County.
The Salvation Army will also be starting a direct mail campaign to raise money for families that need help buying food and clothing, or paying rent.
All donations remain in the county to assist local families in need.
