FLINT TOWNSHIP (WJRT) -

(11/10/12) - On the 11th day, of the 11th month, at the 11th hour, many communities across the country will pause to pay tribute to our military men and women. It's all in honor of Veterans Day.

A local group however, got started a day early.

St. Pius X honored soldiers and their families with a 'Military Mass of Appreciation' Saturday.

The names of dozens of military personnel were read as family members lit candles to honor their loved ones.

"I think it is a great thing. We don't look at our veterans, those are serving and had served, and give them a day of appreciation. Why are we here? We don't enjoy the freedoms unless we give them that day," said Joseph George, a retired Lieutenant Colonel.

The service also celebrated the 237th birthday of the U.S. Marine Corps.
