Bay City holiday expo brings exposure to small businesses

BAY CITY (WJRT) -

(11/11/12)- We haven't even made it to Thanksgiving, but already Christmas items are out on store shelves. But before you head to the big box stores, some local retailers want you to give them a try.

Holiday crafts to decorate your home, clothing to dress you or your little one, and jams, dressings and spreads to delight your taste buds were all on display Saturday at the 'Shop Small Business Holiday Expo' in Bay City.

Every store at the event is locally owned. Organizers hope the expo will create more business for locally owned stores and shops.

"If people made a point to shop local, it would be so great for their businesses to expand. They could hire more employees and it would just be great for the local economy," said Debbie Sumera, an organizer of the event.

Barb Schian, owner of Pride and Country Village on East Holland Road in Saginaw, believes her business will benefit from the exposure.

"A lot of people have never heard of us, who have been to our booth today, and hopefully we could get more of a customer base out of Bay City. I am feeling very good about it, I am, I think that it's going to help us," she said.

Organizers hope to make the expo an annual event. They donated $1,000 to the Food Bank of Eastern Michigan to help feed families in the community over the holiday season.
