(11/12/12) - Every year, students and staff at Elsa Meyer Elementary in Corunna observe Veterans Day. But this year it took on a whole new meaning.
Just a few months ago, this community lost Army Private First Class Shane Cantu while he was serving in Afghanistan.
Monday, his family attended a flag raising ceremony at Elsa Meyer Elementary - Shane's old school.
"It's very heart-touching for our young kids today to come up with something to honor someone who went to their school and fought for their country," said Jennifer Clarke, Shane Cantu's mom.
Emotions were on display for a young man who left a vivid impression on his community. Clarke listened as the kids remembered her son and other heroes.
After the ceremony, students - led by the Corunna VFW post 4005 - went outside to donate a flag made of bottle caps to Shane's mom. It was a special moment for everyone who took part.
"He was my brother's friend, he played football and he was in the Army," said third grader Lucy Marsh.
As tough as it was for Shane's mom, the ceremony also brought a sense of peace.
"Everything helps, it's just hard sometimes to attend things, but I do in honor of my boy," she said.
