(11/12/12) - Mid-Michigan will be a focal point for fashion, at least for a couple of days.
The first ever Vehicle City Fashion Week is underway, with workshop events and mixers scheduled for Local 432 downtown and Genesee Valley, not to mention red carpet runway shows at the Sloan Museum.
"This is huge. There are a lot of designers in the area that are thirsty for an opportunity to present their collections to the community," said Kayla Wilburn, Vehicle City Fashion Week director. "We have Fame Boutique. We have Don Smith who does Junk Shoes. We have Crystal Paris."
Kayla Wilburn, a Flint Southwestern Academy graduate, is also one of the designers.
"My own line is Fannie Lucille. I do handbags and apparel. Yes, I've been to New York, I've been to Paris and Milan. I lived in London for a while, so I have lots of experience in fashion and going around the world to give me an inspiration," she said.
While designers from LA and New York are participating, the emphasis will be on local talent.
"There's a lot of designers in Flint who are designing out of their homes. They're opening up boutiques, they're designing shoes, so everything that you have in New York and Paris, you also have in Flint, Michigan," Wilburn said.
This week, Wilburn also hopes to provide experience and networking opportunities for aspiring models.
"We've visited Central Michigan. We've been in Detroit and Flint, so we're building a roster, and also pairing them up with agencies," she said.
As a bonus, plenty of fashion aficionados will be on hand to offer advice on what to wear, and what not to wear.
