(11/12/12) - Many Mid-Michigan families are working to brighten the lives of millions of children around the world.
Volunteers at the Swartz Creek United Methodist Church are collecting 8,000 gift-filled shoe boxes received from area churches.
It's part of Operation Christmas Child.
Small boxes are filled with several items a child in a third world nation would like or need.
Crayons, toys and personal care items are all carefully packed
"Nothing too fancy; it's not real expensive to put these together. But the main point is we're getting an opportunity to get the gospel into these communities and let them know somebody out there is sending them a gift of love," said Kathy Strauss, Operation Christmas Child.
The deadline for donating to the program is Monday, Nov. 19.
The gift boxes will be sent to Minneapolis before being distributed around the world.
