Grand Blanc dentist once again offering day of free dental care

Posted: Updated:
GRAND BLANC (WJRT) -

(11/14/12) - If a lack of cash has been getting in the way of a trip to the dentist, that shouldn't be a problem on Friday.

"It is absolutely free. We do extractions, cleanings and fillings. You have to choose which procedure you want," said Dr. Abe Jarjoura.

It's all part of the fifth annual "Dentistry from the Heart" event, running from From 7:30 a.m. - 5 p.m. at the Dental Care Team office in Grand Blanc.

"We're expecting to see between 200 and 250 patients this year, similar to years before. We've been doing it for a while, and it keeps growing," Jarjoura said.

The offer is open to any adult who can't afford dental care.  A crew of five dentists will be available in the office, located at 8189 South Saginaw Street, to help handle the rush.

"We have about 70 volunteers, ranging from dental hygienists to people directing traffic, so it's a big operation," Jarjoura said.

Last year, people began showing up at five p.m. the night before. By 6:15 in the morning, the line was nearly 300 deep.

"We'll have a warming tent, but it won't be set up until we get here in the morning, so I would dress for the weather. Bring blankets and chairs," said Dental Care Team Marketing Director Kristi Swink.

Dr. Jarjoura know his staff might not be able to get to everyone that shows up.

"We'll try to get to as many people as we can. It's a first come, first served basis," Jarjoura said.

"If we don't get to them, we will have coupons that we'll hand out to everyone that was here," Swink said.

Dentistry from the Hearts costs the Dental Care Team thousands upon thousands of dollars to put on, but on this day in particular, it's definitely not about the money or turning a profit.

"People that have been waiting here out in the cold for hours, and then they have an extraction done for a tooth that's been bugging them for years in some cases, the amount of appreciation we get and thanks that we get are just worth it," Jarjoura said.
