Fix the Debt campaign launches in Michigan

(11/14/12) - The financial crisis has many in Michigan concerned about the country's future. In Lansing, a grassroots movement was launched Wednesday to support lawmakers in their efforts to come up with a deal.

The campaign is called Fix the Debt Michigan. Leaders are confident a compromise can be reached. They say it will have to include three things.

"We want them to know that there are people in Michigan who support them in making the hard choices," said Campaign Co-Chair Ken Sikkema.

Fix the Debt Michigan is a non-partisan group of businesses, community leaders and individuals.

"The time is now for Congress and the White House to develop a comprehensive debt reduction plan that provides stability for our employers to help lead to economic investment from private sector and job creation throughout the country," said Tim Daman, Lansing Chamber of Commerce.

Fix the Debt Michigan says the so called fiscal cliff and the $16 trillion debt are the biggest economic challenges facing the nation today.

"The fiscal cliff will affect everybody, it's combination of spending cuts of many domestic programs defense cuts, tax increases go deep into middle class, even lower middle class wage earners," Sikkema said.

Sikkema says to avoid an economic meltdown, congressional leaders and the president must find a compromise on three things. "One, there will have to be spending reductions, two,  medicare, medicaid, social security will have to be reformed and part of that, social security must be strengthened for the next generations, and three there must be a comprehensive pro growth tax reform that broadens the base, lowers the rate and yes raises revenue," Sikkem said.

The country's financial uncertainties worry small business owners.

"We do not need our small businesses sitting on the sidelines waiting to determine whether they will hire or invest," said Rob Fowler, Small Business Association.
