(11/16/12) - Friday, a Mid-Michigan company put regular business aside to help the hungry. Ameriprise Financial employees teamed up for a National Day of Service.
Right now, the Food Bank of Eastern Michigan is in their busiest stretch of the year. Help is needed daily to sort through all the donations for the needy.
"It's really an important time to have volunteers here at the food bank. We're putting out more food than we ever have in the fourth quarter, so we really need to the help," said Kara Ross of the Food Bank of Eastern Michigan.
Friday afternoon, that help came from volunteers who work at the Grand Blanc Ameriprise Financial branch. Employees put in several hours of work as part in the company's third annual National Day of Service.
"We look at the issues of the last few years and a lot of people are needing help and we thought hunger relief is a good place for us to help out," said James Lang of Ameriprise Financial.
This was Marci James first time at the food bank. This experience really opened her eyes to the need that exists in our community.
"What an operation, wow," she said. "The numbers are really overwhelming, and I will be back. I'll definitely be back."
For Marci and others, it's one day of service that could translate into a lifetime of volunteering.
