(11/16/12) - It's important to pay your property taxes - that was the message Friday from Genesee County Treasurer Deb Cherry.
Cherry says about 8,000 homes are in jeopardy of being foreclosed on because of unpaid taxes from the 2010 tax year.
But, there is help available through payment plans and assistance - if people let them know they may have trouble paying their taxes ahead of time.
"We can't lower the fee, we can't lower the interest rate, but we can help people so they don't lose their homes if they get to that point," Cherry said.
About 1,000 homes were saved from foreclosure this year by The Tax Foreclosure Prevention Program.
The due date for current winter taxes in Feb. 28, 2013.
