(11/19/12) - Thanksgiving is just days away, and in the true spirit of the
holiday season, a pair of Mid-Michigan radio stations teamed up Monday morning
for a massive food giveaway.
The line began forming at 5 a.m., five hours early, for the 2nd annual Food for
Families thanksgiving giveaway at Christ the King Catholic Church in Flint.
The event was organized by radio stations B95 and Z92.7, along with the Flint
Housing Commission and Food Bank of Eastern Michigan.
"It's 5 in the morning, and there are already cars lined up. There's definitely
a need for this," said Nikki B., B95 midday host.
"That's why we're out here in the community. We want to make sure that everyone
has a good and festive holiday season," said B-Mac, Z92.7 afternoon host.
Those that arrived early came well prepared.
"We've got our blankets and pillows, but we get some good food when we come to
these," said Flint resident Kim Marsh.
The line wrapped around the building as Food Bank of Eastern Michigan got ready
to unload close to 20,000 pounds of food.
"I'll tell you, I'll eat well tomorrow and on Thursday. Thank you. I want to
thank everybody," said Belinda Reed, Flint resident.
"I am unemployed. It's very hard. I have a little bit of funds and a little bit
of everything, but this will go a long way. Yes it does," said Flint resident
Myrna Garvin.
And it wasn't only the food inside those boxes that will make a difference, it's
also the gesture itself.
"I'm thankful for all of this. There are some less fortunate than I am, but I'm
thankful for whatever I get, and I thank Christ the King for doing this, and I
mean that from my heart," said Flint resident Linda Jones.
