Decommissioned Navy ship listing in Saginaw River

BAY COUNTY (WJRT) -

(11/19/12) - Low water levels created a little problem in Bay County. That's where the USS Edson is now docked. The navy ship is listing in the Saginaw River. 'Listing' is a sailor's term meaning "to tilt to one side."

The Edson spent years helping to defend our nation. In August, the ship was brought to Mid-Michigan. It will serve as a floating museum, but first they'll have to get it balanced.

Saginaw Valley Naval Ship Museum President Mike Kegley tells ABC12 the ship started to lean the second day it arrived in Bay County. Kegley says during that time, the area got a lot of rain, the river rose about two feet, and a steady southwestern wind moved the Edson. The ship made contact with a ledge near the shore and when the water went back down the ship was stuck, now it's leaning about six or seven degrees on its right side.

Kegley says he does not believe the listing will cause any major problems. After they get the ship off of the ledge, they will take it to it's new home near the Independence Bridge Boat Launch.
