Genesee Co. woman loses everything in house fire, students help her rebuild life

FLINT (WJRT) -

(11/19/12) - She's always been there for people in need, but now a Genesee County woman needs some help herself.

A fire ripped through her home one week ago, leaving her with nothing. Her name is Katrina Hawkins and she's a vocal coach in Gaines Township, but that's not all she does.

She helps students use their talents to give back to their community and now, that's what they're doing for her.

"If it wasn't for this, I don't know what I would do. I'm just keeping the faith," Hawkins said.

Monday night, they held a benefit for Hawkins, collecting donations to help out their coach and friend.

"She is so awesome, she is like family, she gets close to everyone of her students," said Sunny Consiglio, one of Hawkins' students.

"I was really sad, I was like 'she doesn't deserve that,' I believe she's going to come up from it and be good in the end," said Halle Bartlett, another one of her students.

These students learned to give back through Katrina. They often put on benefits to help people in need, such as homeless veterans or the food bank.

So it's fitting that they raise their voices high to help the woman who's already helped so many.

"She's really supportive. If you mess up, she will just look at you and say, 'It's OK, keep going'. It makes you feel really good," said Paige Cram, another student of Hawkins.

"She's not just our vocal coach, she's like family to us, we all love her to death," said student Sara Boyer.

"I love them, I'm so proud of them, I'm proud they're using their voices to help continuously," Hawkins said.

Katrina plans to rebuild her home.
