Night before Thanksgiving is biggest bar night of the year

(11/21/12) - It's a night to visit friends and family before the holiday season kicks off, and that means one busy night out on the town.

The day before Thanksgiving is a major bar night, and that means a huge boost to local pubs and restaurants, and it means a potentially busy night for police.

It's the biggest bar night of the year. Bars say they'll make more money Wednesday night than they will any other night this year.

Mixing friends, family and the Thanksgiving holiday weekend is the recipe for a big boom in business, here in Old Town Saginaw.

"Our sales on a Saturday night are doubled on a night like this, it's a great night," said Chris Woizeschke, bar manager of Retro Rocks.

"We definitely make a lot more than usual because there's a lot of people from out of town, we're able to show off our bar and what we can offer to the community," said Sophelia Alviar with J. B. Meinberg.

By the end of the night, nearly every bar will be shoulder-to-shoulder. For some, it's one of the best nights of the year to visit their favorite local haunts.

"Just celebrating our festivity before the day of Thanksgiving and then tomorrow we'll wake up and eat ourselves sober and stay stuffed on the couch all day," said Edward Heft, while enjoying the big bar night.

But with the partying, expect to see more police. Extra officers are on the road, keeping a lookout for those who drink and get behind the wheel.

It's something bar managers are grateful for.

"Usually it seems like they have more cab service down here and we appreciate the officers that are down here all night long. It helps us out tremendously by what they do," Woizeschke said.

Bars will be busy all weekend long, so police will have extra patrols through Sunday.
