(11/22/12) - They have been recognized as one of the top K9 teams around and they work right here in Mid-Michigan.
"It's a very dangerous job," says Mt. Morris Township Police Lt. Matt Lasky.
On a recent Tuesday, we tagged along as Mt. Morris Township Police Officer Jeff Iski and his partner Cash trained.
They train alongside some of the other K9 teams in Genesee County.
"We have one in Mt Morris Township, two in the Genesee County Sheriff's Department, one in Swartz Creek, one in Flint Twp and one in Burton," Iski says.
They are a unique breed. There's few left when police departments have to closely consider if they can afford this type of tool.
"We've been one of the longest running dog programs in the county," Lasky says. He used to be the department's K9 handler.
Mt. Morris Township Police have found it's very valuable for them.
"We just did an armed robbery on Pierson Road," Iski says. "We ended up finding the suspect, Cash did on the track, and then we went back and located the gun he had thrown."
"Tracking is his specialty," Iski says.
His numbers back that up. Since Cash and Iski have been at it, since 2007, they've responded to more than 500 calls.
"Forty felony arrests, with tracking or building search apprehensions, and approximately 60 narcotic arrests," Iski says.
In June, a police detective was shot at responding to a shots fired call.
Officers responded quickly - Cash and Iski tracked the suspects. They were arrested and charged.
That incident got them nominated for the National Association of Police Canine Handlers K9 team of the year.
