Flint plans to demolish 600 abandoned houses

Posted: Updated:
FLINT (WJRT) -

(11/28/12) - Six hundred vacant houses in Flint are coming down in the next few months, and the demolition is now officially underway.

Flint is using federal dollars and teaming up with the Genesee County Landbank to get the job done.

The money comes from neighborhood stabilization dollars and the hope is knocking down these homes will create safer a safer place for children to play, people to live and businesses to grow.

Flint and the land bank are submitting a blight elimination grant proposal to the state for $5  million in additional demolition dollars.

Beginning with a parade that started at East Pierson Road and culminating at Berston Field House, rally-goers were met with a slew of vendors, activities and food that was put on by the Community Take-Back Organization. And with violent crime down in the city this year, the new theme attached to the event this time around was a "Celebration of Life".
