Table & Tap bringing bbq, beer, and bourbon to Downtown Flint

FLINT (WJRT) -

(11/29/12) - In a matter of months, a new restaurant plans to tempt downtown Flint's after work crowd with the sweet smell of barbeque.

"It's exciting. It's a little different from when we opened about a year ago, the Flint Crepe Company.  Now we're talking about barbeque, beer and bourbon," said Table & Tap owner Robb Klaty.

Table and Tap is scheduled to open sometime between February and April in the Wade Trim Building, across from the Capitol Theater. Extensive renovations are underway.

"It was a Mexican restaurant before. Everything's come out from before. Everything new is coming in. There's a bar. It's an all kitchen with all the equipment needed to smoke great meat," Klaty said.

Speaking of which, Klaty and his partners are the first to admit they don't know too much about barbeque. One thing they promise, though, is that their version won't kill you.

"Everything is about healthy eating. Barbeque people have this image of it being incredibly unhealthy, but everything is grown locally as much as possible and I really like Robb's philosophy on that," said Table & Tap co-owner Dr. Bobby Mukkamala.

Stretching right down the middle of Table and Tap is the table itself.  It's eighteen feet of reclaimed timber that came straight out of a barn.

"I guess you could call it a community table. It's the biggest table we could get in here.  We just want to get a lot of people together," Klaty said.

As for the bar, it will have 30 different taps, featuring 20 Michigan-made beers, along with so-called "pre-prohibition cocktails".

"We're talking bourbon, we're talking rye whiskey, and we're talking the old gin drinks back in the late 19th century," said bar manager Rob McCullough.

And with all those drinks, and all that barbeque sauce, it's recommended that the business community bring their bibs.

"I think it's going to have the Table & Tap stain on a lot of white shirts. That'll be great," Klaty said.
