Thrift Store to open in Mid-Michigan

BURTON (WJRT) -

(11/30/12) - A vacant store in Burton is getting a makeover. When it's complete, a non-profit organization will move in.

A former Kroger store on Belsay Road in Burton that has been empty for years is getting some TLC and a new tenant.

"We've had to gut the place and pretty much restructure the whole place and line it up for the way we represent our store," said John Bindas with Volunteers of America.

Volunteers of America, a non profit that helps the less fortunate, is getting ready to re-open the building as a thrift store.

"They add a place for people in the community to come out and buy low cost clothing and household goods that are not available at your average stores," Bindas said.

Proceeds from the store will help fund other programs run by the organization. "We have low income, elderly housing scattered across the state of Michigan. We have an adopt a family program right now, providing low income families with Christmas," Bindas said.

This location will be Volunteers of America second store in Mid-Michigan. There are four existing stores statewide.

"It's really big, we're excited to be in the Flint community. This is our first store in the Flint community. The last store we opened was in Corunna last year and we're hoping to have another store here in the Flint area in the next year and a half."

This store should be open on March 1, bringing at least two dozen jobs. To apply - click HERE.
