(12/02/12) - The love and passion for sports has to start somewhere.
Kids and their parents from Flint Community Schools packed into the Flint Northern High School gym Saturday morning.
The district is hoping to sign kids up from across the city for a developmental basketball league.
The program is for third through sixth graders. It's aimed at developing their skills over time.
But the program teaches more than just basketball.
"That is what we are working on, the developmental, the whole person, not just sports, but the character, the importance of education, having them mentor but the important thing right now is the developmental part of it. Develop the skills then they will play it some games and at the same time they will have the support of the community, family, school and everything," said Linnell Jones McKenney, a former professional basketball player.
The group hopes to create developmental leagues for other sports as well.
