(12/03/12) - Construction of a new fire station will soon be underway in Saginaw County.
Monday, Jonesfield Township held a groundbreaking ceremony for its new main fire station.
Operations are currently being run out of the Jonesfield-Lakefield fire station on West Mahoney Street in Merrill.
Township leaders say the new building will give the department more room, and help keep the community safer.
"With the two facilities, we'll be able to put some of our firefighting equipment in the Lakefield area and some here, so it will disperse it a little bit and help us respond a little bit better to the issues that come up in the communities," said Larry Fleming, Jonesfield Township supervisor.
A loan for more than $1 million from the U.S. Department of Agriculture is helping to pay for the project.
