Road Commission to move forward with roundabout plan

Posted: Updated:
FLINT TOWNSHIP (WJRT) -

(12/03/12) - Residents said no. The township board rejected a plan to help fund it. Still, it looks like Flint Township will still be getting a roundabout.

The Genesee County Road Commission is moving forward with the project at the intersection of Court and Dye and it will be paying about $23,000 to make it happen, says Manager-Director John Daly.

"It has an accident history, over the last five years, of about 28 accidents," Daly says.

That history, he says, led to the level of match money required being reduced to just what the Road Commission was willing to pay anyway. A federal grant will help fund the rest of the project, Daly says.

"It's actually a win for everybody, particularly for the people who use that intersection," Daly. says.

"People are the problem, not the intersection," says resident Joseph George.  "I don't want it and it's not needed."

George lives at the corner where that roundabout is about to be. He's been very vocal about trying to find another way.

"Have they done anything to make this intersection safer or any intersection in Genesee County safer? The answer is no," George says. "I'm going to take the information I got and see what we can do to stop this."

Daly says the plan is to start construction in the spring.

This will be the first roundabout in the county.

The total cost for the project is about $230,000, he says.

ABC12 was unable to reach anyone from the Township Board for comment.
