Genesee Co. kids Christmas shop with local heroes

MUNDY TOWNSHIP (WJRT) -

(12/04/12) - For some kids, it's a once in a lifetime opportunity to spend time with a local hero.

Various Meijer locations across Mid-Michigan held their annual Shop with a Hero night, including the store on Hill Road in Mundy Township.

On one hand, it gives officers and paramedics a chance to connect with the kids in their community, but it also helps families have a merrier Christmas.

"It was awesome and I got a ton of toys," said Coy Gorscuch, while shopping with the Mundy Township police department.

Police, firefighters and paramedics from Mundy and Argentine townships grabbed a cart and a kid, and went on a Meijer shopping spree.

"We give each of them a $100 gift card, they go out with a hero, it's kind of heart wrenching at times, often they buy for family members more than themselves," said Hill Road Meijer store director Jeffrey Collet.

These children are often low income or haven't had positive experiences with police, and this helps change that.

"It represents a positive image of the police department to the kids," said Mundy Township Sgt. Tom Hosae.

Aisles were packed with teams of two, looking for that special toy. By the end of the night, everyone got what they came for.

"I got a real fun [Nintendo] DS game that I haven't had before, all these things were just awesome," Gorscuch said.

"It was a blast, good time, we do it every year and have fun every time," said Sgt. Hosae.

Meijer stores in Birch Run and Kochville Township also held a 'Shop with a Hero' event Tuesday night.
