Local organizations team up to dispel flu vaccine myths

GENESEE COUNTY (WJRT) -

(12/04/12) - Here's a statistic that may alarm you - about 36,000 people die each year from the flu.

Several local agencies are teaming up to raise awareness about the issue.  The Universal Kidney Foundation in Burton is at the center of the effort.

The Antioch Missionary Baptist Church in Flint hosted a forum Tuesday evening.

It's one of five planned for this week to coincide with the CDC's "National Influenza Week".

The goal? To dispel the myths about the flu vaccine and encourage those who need it the most, to take advantage of local resources offering them up.

Officials say many minorities go unvaccinated, making them more at risk of getting and transmitting the virus.

Flu vaccines and blood pressure screenings are offered before and after each session.
