New business opens downtown Flint

FLINT (WJRT) -

(12/06/12) - Five years ago, sisters Marquitta and Mejuana Harris were working in a factory. While they say it was a good living, they had other plans in mind.

"Five years ago, we didn't know what we wanted to do, we just had a name. Now we're finally putting it into play," Marquitta said.

The sisters' dream was a clothing boutique. The name - FAIM, which stands for 'For All Individuals Moving Up.'

"We're trying to make sure that people aren't just dressed physically, that they're dressed mentally, which will help them in searching for a career and going to get an education. Looking for a job is better, but when you feel better about how you look, you go in there with confidence," Mejuana said.

The sisters say the boutique has clothing to fit everyone's need. They also supply their stores with items from local designers and artists.

"The talent base that we have here is incredible and we want to bring that forth and we don't feel like people have an outlet for that in Flint," Mejuana said.

The sisters hope their new business will inspire others to continue the momentum of growth in Flint. "Downtown is coming back, as we always say. Flint has had a negative connotation towards it so we think being downtown, which we feel is the center of the community, being down here will bring forth a lot of different people."
