Song recorded at Mott Community College supports Iranian prisoner

FLINT (WJRT) -

(12/07/12) - Mott Community College is pulling together to draw attention to the plight of a political prisoner from Mid-Michigan. A song is being recorded to support the family of Amir Hekmati, who is being held against his will in Iran.

Hekmati has been jailed since 2011, accused by the Iranian government of being a CIA spy. Friends at Mott Community College hope a song written for Amir will remind the world about the situation.

Faculty members at Mott were in the recording studio, adding their parts to the production.

"After getting to know the family and getting to know about the situation, I was inspired to write the song," said  Dr. Matthew Packer, MCC Music professor.

Packer and Richard Kerry Thompson performed the vocals. The Mott Concert Choir backed up the song and various musicians lent their talents.

"This is what it's all about and I'm really glad we could do this. A lot of things fell into place at just the right time and it feels great," said William Withem, music arranger.

It's hoped the song will inspire people to back the cause financially.

"All the proceeds from that will go to support the family and Amir's defense fund," Packer said.

Amir hasn't been heard from since June. His parents were at the recording session and hope the song will bring pressure on the Iranian government to free their son.

"Amir is missing us and we are missing Amir," said Ali Hekmati, MCC biology professor.

Time is critical now. In September, Professor Hekmati suffered a stroke and underwent surgery for a brain tumor.

"I'm very sick with cancer, the kind of cancer I have may do me in. It's hard to tell how much more time I have," Hekmati said.

Perhaps music will open doors that the Iranian government has closed.

"I hope it will clear the pathway for Amir to come home," his father said.

Producers will tweak the song and place it on a website dedicated to Amir. For a link, click here.
