(12/21/12) - Following months of hard work, it's gift box pickup and delivery time at the Old Newsboys of Flint's warehouse.
"It's a big day. It's basically our last day of the year," said Chris Hamilton, Old Newsboys executive director.
Early Friday morning, dozens of volunteers began packing boxes, with plans to pack late into the night.
"You get a sweat suit, a stocking cap, personal care products and a toy. For a young person, we throw a lot of extra things in there too," Hamilton said.
You might say the Mundy Township facility doubles as Santa's workshop. This season, his elves and the Newsboys expect to provide gifts for around 4,600 kids.
"We're definitely heavier on the nice list, but there are a few on the naughty list. They still have time to turn it around," Santa said.
The deadline to apply for assistance passed Friday afternoon, but Hamilton anticipates helping a few more families leading up to Christmas Eve.
"I can't help it. I'll be in here just to make sure I don't have any messages or that's someone we've missed. I'll be checking my voicemail just be sure," he said.
$20 sponsors a child and provides a box for Christmas. A big portion of the gifts were purchased through the Newsboy's annual paper sale, held last week.
"A lot of corners were up, some were down, but overall, I think we did extremely well," Hamilton said.
The Old Newsboys Holiday Campaign goal this year is $400,000, but with only a few days to go, they're still around $50,000 short.
"Of course we're going to make it. The good people of Mid Michigan will not let us down. Ho, ho, ho," Santa said.
