Genesee County Toys for Tots works overtime on Christmas Eve

FLINT (WJRT) -

(12/24/12) - It's Christmas Eve, and Toys for Tots of Genesee County is making one last push to fill a few dozen remaining orders.

"This is crunch time. Santa is coming. He says make sure he has the toys he needs to make sure that all the needy children in Genesee County have at least one toy under the tree for Christmas morning," said Toys for Tots coordinator Gary Stanley.

By early Monday morning, most collection boxes had already been brought in from area businesses, however, donations were down this season, and Toys for Tots is asking anyone with last minute help to bring it to their headquarters at 4425 South Saginaw Street.

"We have a few families that we can't pack because we don't have the age appropriate toys that they need, so we're trying to get those toys in," Stanley said.

One of the biggest concerns on this final day of collection is getting enough toys in stock for infants, everything from blocks to baby dolls. There's also a shortage of gifts for boys and girls ages 10-12.

"For boys, we're talking about remote control cars, action figures, stuff like that.  For girls we're talking about makeup, and just glittery stuff," said Private First Class Derek Hatter.

The call for help was put out, and Mid-Michigan responded. By early afternoon, more than 500 additional toys had been donated, enough to put Toys for Tots back on track.

"I am overwhelmed. My heart has no room for anything else because of all the joy I got from seeing how many people would come and help everyone in this community when they were down," Stanley said.

Thanks to an outpouring of community support, Toys for Tots was able to provide gifts for nearly 6,500 children.
